With only my EeePC available (and so no real work to distract me) on the way back from FOSDEM I decided to pass the time by hacking together a little web interface to TangoGPS’s public friends server, which allows TangoGPS users to share their location with other Tango users. So now you can stalk your OpenMoko toting friends even easier from any internet enabled computer. It uses OpenStreetMap for the maps and automatically queries the tango friends sever every 10 minutes.
It can be found at http://mikeasoft.com/~mike/tangofriends.
Well done!
I like it

Cool! Great that you got some decent hacking time during the trip.
Let my know when you have some more free time, and I will bury you with merge requests 😉

Interesting, but why not hook this into OpenMoko’s IM functionality by connecting with Jabber contacts using the XEP-0080 standard?
That is at least what Empathy is bringing to the GNOME desktop, and interoperability would be great.

I’m guessing that Empathy doesn’t make any of this information public like the tango friends server does, only shares it with contacts; so it wouldn’t be so useful from the point of view of a web service like this (unless I went to the extent of letting you log in to a jabber server). But it does sound like it would be interesting to get this sort of support integrated in to tango itself, I might have a look at doing that if I get time (that’s a big if though).
