Update: All dictionaries except for Welsh and Esperanto (which aren’t supported by kindlegen) have been updated to work with the Kindle 4.
I’ve had a Kindle for a little while and really like it, but one of the areas it seems to be somewhat lacking in is the availability of translation dictionaries, as such I knocked up a quick script to convert TinyLex dictionaries from the Apertium project into indexed Kindle dictionaries. The most useful of these is probably the German – English dictionaries as these are very complete (over 160,000 entries).
One thing that I find quite useful is setting the German -> English dictionary as my primary dictionary (instructions below) then opening the English -> German dictionary and searching for words (or vice versa), this way you can get an instant re-translation of any words suggested to you.
Installation
Kindle 3
- Download whichever dictionary you’re interested in from the list below.
- Transfer the file across to your Kindle as normal.
- Press the menu key on your Kindle.
- Select Settings.
- Press the menu key again.
- Select Change Primary Dictionary.
- Select your new dictionary from the list.
Kindle 4
- Download whichever dictionary you’re interested in from the list below.
- Transfer the file across to your Kindle as normal.
If this is the only dictionary you have for this language you’re now done. If you have multiple dictionaries continue:
- Press the menu key on your Kindle.
- Select Settings.
- Select edit next to Dictionaries on the second page.
- Select the language you wish to set the dictionary for.
- Select your new dictionary from the list.
Afrikaans
English -> Afrikaans 5165 entries
Afrikaans -> English 5195 entries
Esperanto
English -> Esperanto 12344 entries
Esperanto -> English 21316 entries
French
English -> French 6315 entries
French -> English 6304 entries
German (includes phrases)
English -> German 162004 entries
German -> English 166733 entries
Polish
English -> Polish 8107 entries
Polish -> English 9373 entries
Portuguese
English -> Portuguese 4759 entries
Portuguese -> English 4609 entries
Spanish
English -> Spanish 8488 entries
Spanish -> English 8769 entries
Welsh
English -> Welsh 6674 entries
Welsh -> English 8632 entries
Scripts
For those of you interested in the scripts used to generate these dictionaries, they can now be downloaded here: kindle-dict.tar.gz.
Most of the heavy lifting is done by the tab2opf.py script from StarDict-Lingea, the tinylex.sh script will do the necessary conversion to get a tinylex dictionary into a tab delimited format suitable for use by tab2opf.py, it’ll then run tab2opf.py and kindlegen on the output, providing you with a Mobipocket dictionary for use with the Kindle. See the README for more in depth instructions on how to make use of it.
Nice work, many thanks! Any chance of doing your magic on a Dutch > English dictionary?
Comment by Terence — January 6, 2011 @ 10:19 am
Unfortunately TinyLex doesn’t include a Dutch -> English dictionary, but if you can find me a freely licensed one (GPL, GFDL, CC, etc.) I can probably knock up another script to handle it.

Shane, there is some Norwegian-English in Apertium http://apertium.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/apertium/incubator/apertium-no-en/
It could easily be converted into a TinyLex dictionary (just give ebenimeli a nudge, see http://www.tinylex.com/ )

Dear Mike,
I wonder if you could tell me what one needs to do to a dictionary to allow
Kindle to turn it into a translation dictionary. I downloaded a large Russian-English
dictionary in Kindle format. I can use it in Kindle, they also made it possible
to look up in it in Latin transliterations. But making it primary dictionary did not
help: it still does not look up the Russian words next to the cursor.
Thanks,
Peter

Excellent work and thanks for sharing!
But one problem… In the German-English dictionary, there seems to be a problem with capitalized words. The dictionary words are all lower case, so words that start with a capital letter are ignored. Unfortunately, this rather cripples the dictionary in German, because it ignores all nouns! Is there a fix or work-around for this problem?
Comment by Samson — May 21, 2011 @ 7:58 pm

Hello, Will you be so kind to make an English – Bulgarian dictionary.
Comment by Martin — June 15, 2011 @ 8:20 am
While I’m not having a problem with capitalized words in the German dictionary, there is a major flaw in that the dictionary does not account for inflection. Since I don’t intend to manually type every word I don’t understand in the uninflected form to get the definition, this dictionary is useless to me.

Problem with the German-English dictinary … if a noun or adjective is plural or feminine, Kindle gives no translation at all.
This problem could be fixed if all the plurals and feminines were included in the dictionary, the same as the declensions and past participles of the verbs have been included.
Or … if Kindle would just make a guess and return its “best match” it would almost always be right.

Downloaded the German-English mobi file and transferred it to the Kindle.
First to the primary folder, but it didn’t appear under “change primary dictionaries”.
Then I moved it to “Sidecar” in the System folder where the Oxford dictionary is, but it still doesn’t appear.
What am I doning wrong?
Do I not understand your term “as normal”? I took it to mean the usual way one transferes files.

Hi, I have a Kindle without the keyboard (4th gen) and I can’t get the German-English dictionary to work with German books. I can set it as the default dictionary for English language books, or books in German that the kindle doesn’t recognise as being German, but not for any books that the Kindle thinks are in German.
This renders it a little pointless, is there any simple way of fixing this? Does anyone else have the same problem?

This will change the standard dictionary…

German-English Dictionary
it doesn’t work with Kindle Touch. The dictionary appears in the English section and not in the German. I don’t know how it works on other Kindle device, but on Touch, if the book is in german, you can use only german dictionaries.
In this case the german-english dictionary is in the English section, so I cannot use with a german book.

The English-German works on my Kindle Touch just fine but not the way around. I´m trying to read a book in German and I´m frustrated as hell since every time I highlight a word I get this message:
“Dictionary not found for this book´s language. To download a dictionary, go to Archived Items.”
And yes, the German to English dictionary is set as default.
What can I do?

Thanks for the work on this Mike, this is great!
For all you Kindle Touch owners, I figured out how to get the German-English mode to work and appear under the German dictionaries. Specifically the XML files are generated with english as the in and out language and the language of the dictionary as the whole; this is probably why it is showing up as an English dictionary. I rebuilt the dictionary manually and edited the opf xml file to specify the languages… i.e.
the language tag to be DE instead of EN
and the DictionaryInLanguage to be de instead of en-us. Then I ran kindlegen on the hacked xml file.

Pinocho–press Menu and go to Settings. Then press Menu again and select Change Primary Dictionary. Select the dictionary you installed and you should be good.

Thank you Ron— but it doesnt work ; I can just use other dictionary I downloaded from other website (it’s not .mobi)

Hello!
Sounds great, but I can’t manage to switch to any dictionary i add in my kindle. They just don’t show up in the dictionaries preferences…
(I have the last kindle version, not the touch version, and tested with firmware 4.0 and 4.0.1)
Einzelkind, I would like to try the file you uploaded, but the link seems to be dead. Would it be possible for you to reupload it?
Big thanks!

my first time here, but one thing that’s absolutely neceesary
is to tranfer the mobi file by USB, not by any other means.
If you don’t do that, you will never be able to change the primary (default) dictionary.
I have the basic Kindle 4, if that helps anybody.
A great site this, fantastic work.

This is awesome. All I had to do was put it on my Kindle with Calibre, and it automatically works. By the way, I used the German dictionary. It works perfectly, especially with more modern German works. Older works, such as Kafka, will have words that aren’t in the dictionary, but still, it’s awesome and a solution to a problem I’ve had since I first started reading ebooks.

First of all great job guys ! It’s much apreciated.
The only issue I have is that I cannot set the De-En dictionary as a default, and while my german level is not that high, I still have to look up many words, and it’s frustrating going back and forth between the book and the dictionary. I saw that the problem was solved (comment 103). Unfortunately the file is not available any more.
Can anyone share the modified version of the german-english dictionary?
Thanks!

Comment by Ginger — September 13, 2012 @ 11:07 am
Hi Gilles – I have various German-English dictionaries on my Kindle, the one I use most often I downloaded from Project Gutenberg. But since many German words have endings and conjugations, sometimes you have to stop and manually type in or alter the word in the text -‘schön’ instead of ‘schönes’, for example. Sometimes it’s a bit of trial and error, but it usually works. Happy reading!

2. Do you know if I can use the Kindle Paperwhite with books in Russian and do you have a Russian dictionary? P.S. When I use the term Russian I mean real Russian with Cyrillic alphabet.
Thanks!

Mike. Thanks for the info on your GER-ENG dictionary. I did install it on my Kindle 3.4. I did work fine on all my “other” German books, but not on the 2 books that I posted to on Amazon.
So the books “Die Dritte Finger” & “Mord am Morgen” are still having a problem! I’ve asked Amazon to escalate the problem and get back to me.

Found a bad solution for question 175 – but better a bad one than none at all:
Bad workaround, but works:
The trick is to rename the name of the dictionary file that is loaded by default!
Download a dictionary from e.g. Mikeasoft (as .mobi).
Open Kindle app, open a book, select a word -> dictionary will open
-> click on settings, select a dictionary you will never need (e.g. espanol) – kindle will download it.
Open a file manager on your tablet/smartphone which allows you so sort by file date (newest first=desc).
Go to storage/sdcard0/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files
the newest file (*.prc) will be the downloaded new dictionary. Rename (e.g. in *.prc into .prc.espanol). Copy the mobi-file into this directory and rename it (use the original name of the espanol dictionary, e.g. B005F12G7O_EBOK.prc)
Now the new dictionary is available in kindle (but unfortunately under the name of ESPANOL). You can select this dictionary as your default dictionary just the way as you always do.

Hi, may I dare to ask what’s the difference between Kindle 3 and Kindle 4 in regard to dictionary support? e.g. why wouldn’t Esperanto be supported by kindlegen only for Kindle 4? is it about encoding letters such as ĵ Ä Ä‰ etc.?
I’d really like to get my hands on an Esperanto-English dictionary :\
Comment by Cioran — May 6, 2013 @ 8:43 pm
With the Kindle 3 all dictionaries and books are treated the same regardless of language, with the Kindle 4 you can setup different dictionaries for different langues, so for example, when you read a German book it’ll use your German dictionary but when you read an English book it’ll use your English dictionary. Kindlegen doesn’t recognise Welsh or Esperanto as languages so they just get treated as English dictionaries, you can still use them on the Kindle 4, as long as your Esperanto books also act as English books (which most probably will since they can’t be set to Esperanto) then you shouldn’t have any problems.
Comment by Mike — May 6, 2013 @ 9:34 pm
Interesting. To use a dictionary different than English I need to make sure that the metadata in the mobi file has the language tag spot on (Portuguese for a portuguese dictionary). Are you saying there’s not an “esperanto” tag?
Comment by Cioran — May 12, 2013 @ 8:43 pm
That’s right, kindlegen doesn’t recognise the Esperanto language code.

To those having problems with the German – English dictionary:
If the English dictionary pops up, most likely the document language of your book is set to English.
You should select the book in Calibre, then click on “Edit metadata”, then change language (at the bottom) to German. At least that was the problem by me 🙂

Thanks so much. The Spanish to English isn’t the greatest, but it works for some words and just having the dictionaries and learning how to switch from one to another was worth it. Hope someday you get inspired to add more Spanish/English words and figure out how to get it to at least try if it’s not a perfect match.

Kindle Paperwhite:
Go to Settings -> Device Options -> Language and Dictionaries -> Dictionaries
There you can choose the default dictionary for each language.
Note: If a word is not found in the default dictionary Kindle Paperwhite tries the other dictionaries of that language.

Downloaded the Polish-English dictionary.
Unfortunately, it’s not as useful as I’d like, as it requires words to be in their singular nominative form for the highlighted definition to work – plurals, declined nouns and verbs of all sorts just can’t be found. Searching through the dictionary takes a fair bit of time.
Don’t suppose anyone knows of a way around this?

Awesome, thanks heaps for your efforts! My wife (German) and I (Kiwi) are using the German dictionaries on our Kindle Paperwhites, and they are working well 🙂

Hi, I have a Kindle 4. I’ve been using it to read a French-English parallel book by Dover Publications. Although the book is designed to teach English speakers to speak French, the book’s meta data states that it is an English book and therefore it only uses an English dictionary for automatic lookup. Kindle are waiting for the publisher to respond to this issue.
I was not able to change the book’s meta data language to French because the DRM becomes invalid. I therefore downloaded your French-English dictionary and changed the meta data definition to be English using Calibre, hoping I could make this my default English dictionary while reading this book. Unfortunately the Kindle does not recognise it as a dictionary at all now, so I can’t set it as my default English dictionary. Is there any way around this?

I have the same query as 228. But I cannot see an answer. 228’s query was as follows: “Hi, I have the most basic Kindle, I think it’s the one Amazon first released… but the dictionary I downloaded doesn’t come up under the list of options I could have as my dict. default? Apparently it’s not in the right format – or is this just my kindle?”

I’m having a technical problem that no one else has mentioned, so it’s probably just me being stupid, but I can’t see how to download the dictionaries. If I right-click there is no download option, and if I just click then it opens in a html page, showing a lot of code (which means nothing to me!). Are you able to provide some download instructions for idiots like me please? Thanks! 🙂

My Kindle 5th gen did not recognise the German-English dictionary. I set a tag (501 (CDE type) – EBOK) with Java Mobi Metadata Editor. It does not show up in the list of books but I can select it as a dictionary.

Hi,
the german-english is missing quite a lot of words. Is the TinyLex dictionaries getting any bigger i.e. would it make sense to re-run the script and update the mobi file?
Amazing work, thank you so much!
